I am currently a sophomore at Virginia Tech pursuing chemistry and elementary education. When I tell people what I'm doing they think I'm crazy. "How in the world are you going to teach chemistry to a bunch of little kids?" is the question I am most often asked. Unfortunately most people think that only English and math teachers are qualified to teach the younger age group, but they are sadly mistaken.
When I was in elementary school I remember that we did not study science year round. We would switch between science and history at the end of each unit. I had science all year for the first time in sixth grade but it was never really important until high school. That is how the school system in my hometown still works today. Science is such an important part of our lives but not enough emphasis is put on it in our schools. My goal for having a degree in chemistry and teaching elementary school is to start the appreciation of science at an earlier age so that hopefully in a few years science will be a bigger field of study than it is today.
