Hach Chemistry Teacher Scholars:

Julia Kumpf
Julia grew up in the town of Medfield, Massachusetts, and attended a small but rigorous high school. The daughter of two engineers, Julia knew that engineering was never going to be her calling, but instead always dreamed of becoming a teacher. Towards the end of high school, the subjects of chemistry and physics became her passion. Julia is currently a senior at the University of Massachusetts studying chemistry, physics, and education. During her years at UMass, she has enjoyed mentoring the Chemistry Talent Advancement Program, being the Supplemental Instructor to the sophomore Organic Chemistry class, and serving as the secretary to the UMass Chemistry Club. Through becoming a teacher of chemistry, Julia hopes to help her students find a greater respect for the themselves, their peers, and the world around them.

Karma Tsering
My name is Karma Tsering. I was born and raised in Mussooric, India. My parents and I are refugees from Tibet and came to the United States in 1999. I graduated in 2005 from Northampton (MA) High School. This fall I will be a junior at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (UMass). I am majoring in chemistry with minors in math and computer science. After attending UMass the past two years, I have come to appreciate the importance of science. Science plays a major role in our society and therefore everyone should have the opportunity to learn science. I enjoy being a tutor at UMass, especially when I can spark a student's interest in chemistry. I would like to do the same by becoming a high school science teacher. I plan to teach here inteh US for several years, but hope to go abroad adn help my people at a Tibetan school in India.
